WAFP Employment

Position: Communications & Member Services Manager

The Washington Academy of Family Physicians (WAFP) is the largest specialty medical organization in Washington, representing more than 2,700 family physicians, family medicine residents and medical students throughout the state. Founded in 1948, its mission has been to preserve and promote the science and art of family medicine and to ensure high-quality, cost-effective health care for patients of all ages. The WAFP is a state chapter of the American Academy of Family Physicians (AAFP) which represents more than 97,000 physicians, residents and medical students in the U.S.

Job summary: This position requires strong writing, editing, analytic and communication skills. Good project management, organization, ability to handle multiple priorities, an understanding of public health issues and media relations experience are required, as well.

Reports to: Executive Vice President

Status: Exempt

Specific responsibilities: In cooperation with the EVP, executive leadership, appropriate Academy committees and members:

  • Develop and implement annual Membership Development Plan, including membership benefits packages for market segments, recommend and coordinate research activities (focus groups/surveys/task forces), develop new products/services, make recommendations for EVP and board action. Develop target membership goals and supervise membership tracking. Build strategic partnerships to strengthen member benefits.
  • Oversee Academy communications plan, including establishing annual communications calendar and work plan.
  • Serve as staff editor of Washington Family Physician, the official quarterly publication of WAFP. Liaison with physician editor, plan and write stories as required, supervise production and printing.
  • Develop and implement electronic newsletter.
  • Manage advertising for the website and WFP, including ad sales and revenue development.
  • Manage creation, design and production of Academy promotional materials.
  • Manage Academy web sites, working with staff to coordinate design, content development and review, publishing timelines and analytic evaluation.
  • Develop Academy brand and manage integration in Academy collateral.
  • Coordinate “Family Physician of the Year” award.
  • Coordinate database integration with all Academy data resources (surveys, AAFP resources, etc.). Analyze and disseminate as required.
  • Assist in strategic planning and implementation as required.
  • Maintain and enhance media contacts and relations, on behalf of the Academy and executive leadership sources.
  • Manage and develop WAFP’s annual “Family Medicine Week” observance, including governor’s proclamation, website resources, member mailings, media contacts, article ideas.

Additional responsibilities include staffing WAFP commissions/committees/task forces, planning and staffing board meetings and statewide annual meeting, and other duties as assigned. Occasional travel and weekend meeting attendance are required.

Education/experience requirements: Bachelor’s degree; previous experience working for a non-profit, membership-based organization; understanding of public health issues; publications/publishing experience; outstanding computer skills (preferably PC, including Quark, GoLive!, Illustrator and PhotoShop); website content development. Demonstrated ability to think strategically and develop/manage marketing programs to achieve established objectives.

Casual, flexible office environment with core requirements of professional attitude, maintaining respectful and responsive relationships with five colleagues and all WAFP members, and the collaborative and strategic skills to help in advancing WAFP’s missions and goals.
