Sample Letter to the Editor #1

Dear Editor:

I’m writing this letter as one of the more than 2,600 family doctors in Washington, asking you and your readers to join me in saluting (promoting?) our partnership with families around the state. There’s no news in telling you that your family doctors – and you – face challenges in today’s health-care environment, what with dramatically increasing diagnostic and testing and prescription costs, specialization which makes a holistic approach to health more difficult, and medical malpractice liability.

But you may find it newsworthy that family physicians, as a group, are finding ways to deal with some of these problems. The concept of a “personal medical home,” for example, is one which family doctors embrace – and patients should, too. This is the place which provides a comprehensive care setting for individuals and families, serving as the point of entry into a system of coordinated, collaborative delivery of medical services. A medical home – usually your family doctor – offers an ongoing relationship, a comprehensive repository of medical information, and an accountable and patient-centered environment for the highest-quality medical care.

Because this is Family Medical Week in Washington, I wanted to share with your readers some of the issues that family practice physicians are studying and addressing these days – along with caring for patients! I encourage you to talk to your family doctor about these aspects of good medical care, and if you don’t have a family doctor, please do a favor for yourself and your good health by choosing one. Family doctors are our first line of defense when it comes to sustaining and improving health.

Sincerely,

Dr. xxx
