Family Medicine Week
Sample Letter to the Editor #2
Dear Editor,
As one of the 2,600 family doctors of the Washington Academy of Family Physicians, I wanted to take this opportunity to tell your readers about Family Medicine Week, being celebrated in Washington November 12-18, 2006.
Although you may think that every doctor is a specialist these days, the truth is that family physicians provide the majority of care for Washington’s urban and rural populations. You could call family physicians the “specialists” of general medicine. Yet, fewer and fewer medical students are choosing family medicine as their specialty – the number of family medicine graduates in the U.S. has declined nearly 50 percent since 1997.
That’s bad news for most of us, because family doctors are the first line of defense when it comes to protecting your family’s health. Family doctors are the only doctors dedicated to treating the whole person, including taking care of a patient’s physical, mental and emotional health.
The caring relationships that family doctors establish over the long term with their patients and patient families help to ensure integrated and thoughtful care, a comprehensive repository of health history and information, and higher patient satisfaction with their providers and their overall care.
I think that’s something worth celebrating.
Sincerely,
Dr. xxx
