Reducing Marketing Bias in the WAFP

Adopted as Amended

RESOLVED
, that the WAFP adhere to the ACCME Standards for Commercial Support 2004

RESOLVED, the WAFP adhere to the following principles regarding its relationship with the pharmaceutical industry:

a. No drug company provided lecturers or lectures sponsored by a drug company. This includes lecturers provided by other state academies if they have drug company sponsorship.

b. No drug company sponsored meals or sponsorship of WAFP activities at the scientific assemblies. Food or drink supplied by commercial sponsors should be provided only in the exhibit hall. If costs of a full luncheon lecture are prohibitive in the absence of a corporate sponsor, consider charging an added fee for the lecture to cover meal costs, or selling an inexpensive box lunch for attendees.

c. No routine materials for the scientific assemblies will contain marketing, such as drug company logos or advertisements in the scientific assemblies brochure.

d. Scientific assembly exhibitors would continue to be solicited for the exhibit hall, and unrestricted educational grants would be solicited, but not from drug companies or vendors of prescribed medical products.

i. Clear criteria would need to be developed to standardize how a potential commercial sponsor is reviewed, to promote fairness and minimize controversy (e.g., should the Beef Council be allowed as an exhibitor if red meat has adverse health consequences?)

e. Financial impact: In 2004, this model would have eliminated ~$22,000 in unrestricted educational grants and exhibitor fees. After this adjustment, revenues still would have covered all expenses and allowed a small surplus (~$6,000). Comparable figures for the 2006 scientific assemblies have not yet been determined.
