Public Disclosure of Pharmaceutical Company Gifts

WHEREAS, the continually escalating prices of pharmaceuticals contribute to make the US health care system the most expensive in the world,

WHEREAS, pharmaceutical companies spend $7 billion annually targeting physicians through sophisticated marketing that includes data-mining and gift-giving,

WHEREAS, numerous academic studies have documented that even small gifts given to physicians lead to a reciprocating relationship that increases inappropriate prescribing of new higher-cost drugs that do not necessarily have better efficacy, and in many cases have later proven unsafe (e.g, Vioxx and Avandia),

WHEREAS, WAFP already has taken other efforts to shine light on these practices through its opposition to data-mining and by removing pharmaceutical funding of our Annual Meeting, therefore be it

RESOLVED, that the WAFP support efforts to educate its membership about the conflicts of interest and inappropriate prescribing habits associated with gift-giving to physicians, and

RESOLVED, that the WAFP support the public disclosure of gifts given to physicians by pharmaceutical companies.

RESOLVED, that the WAFP ask WSMA to support public disclosure of gifts given to physicians by pharmaceutical companies.
