National Conference of Special Constituencies

If you are interested in getting more involved in your state and national academies, consider becoming a delegate to American Academy of Family Physicians (AAFP) annual National Conference of Special Constituencies (NCSC).

The 2012 NCSC will be held Thursday, May 3 - Saturday, May 5, in Kansas City, MO. The NCSC is held at the same time as the AAFP Annual Leadership Forum (ALF).

The NCSC convenes delegates from the five recognized special constituencies to discuss issues facing family physicians and to work on resolutions proposing policy direction for the Academy. The WAFP is committed to send delegates representing each of the five special constituencies, defined as:

  • Gay, Lesbian, Bisexual and Transgender (GLBT) Physicians—an active member of AAFP who self-identifies as GLBT or who is supportive of GLBT issues.
  • International Medical Graduate (IMG) Physicians—an active member of AAFP who graduated from medical school outside the United States, Canada or Puerto Rico.
  • Minority Family Physicians—an active member of AAFP who is Black, Asian, Hawaiian Islander, American Indian, Eskimo or Hispanic.
  • New Physicians—an active member of AAFP who has been in practice less than seven years.
  • Women Physicians—an active member of AAFP who is a woman.

NCSC offers its delegates an excellent opportunity for leadership development as well as fellowship with other family physicians from around the United States who are interested in policy development and the future of the specialty. There are opportunities to stand for election to leadership positions for the conference or to represent your constituency as a delegate to the AAFP Congress of Delegates.
