WAFP Foundation

The Washington Academy of Family Physicians Foundation (WAFP Foundation) is the philanthropic arm of the Washington Academy of Family Physicians.

The Foundation was authorized by the 1982 House of Delegates of the Washington Academy of Family Physicians (WAFP). It was founded on the belief that Family Medicine offers a specialty career that is fulfilling, and enriched by the profound impact it has on the lives of both patient and practitioner. We further believe Family Medicine provides patients with health care that is comprehensive, continuing and centered on their needs as individuals and as members of their families and communities.

Mission Statement
The mission of the Washington Academy of Family Physicians Foundation is to fund worthy projects that advance the practice of Family Medicine and ultimately benefit the patients served by the Washington State family physicians. We do this by focusing on projects that:
  • Increase the number of family physicians
  • Promote educational activities
  • Advance research relevant to the specialty of Family Medicine
  • Foster leadership in health care

Organization
The Board of Directors of the WAFP Foundation sets policy and gives approval for funding grants for projects that meet the objectives and priorities of the Foundation.
Accountability for the decisions to allocate Foundation resources is to the Foundation membership and the greater community of Washington State.
The WAFP Foundation is recognized by the Internal Revenue Service as a 501(c)(3) tax-exempt organization and is thereby able to receive tax deductible contributions.
The WAFP Foundation can accept funds directed by a will or trust.

Focus
WAFP Foundation strives to:
  • Increase medical student awareness of rural medicine through support of summer clerkships
  • Promote family medicine oriented research
  • Develop and support continuing medical education programs designed specifically toward family physicians
  • Sponsor public education to promote healthy lifestyles and preventive medicine practices
  • Promote physician and patient well-being in the era of health care reform
Activities
Included in WAFP Foundation’s Accomplishments:
  • Fully funded Endowed Family Medicine Student Scholarship
  • Committed $20,000 to UWSOM TRUST program (Targeted Rural Underserved Track) honoring the memory of Dr. John B. Coombs and Dr. John C. Anderson who tireless advocated for rural family physicians.
  • To date the Foundation has committed $150,000 over three years to help fund and facilitate practice transformation in family physician and primary care practices in Washington state through the Patient-Centered Medical Home – Improving Performance in Practice (PCMH-IPIP) program.
  • Fund rural medicine summer clerkships through the Rural/Underserved Opportunities Program– 350+ students since 1989
  • Funded the UW School of Medicine’s Dr. Theodore J. Phillips Endowed Professorship to Family Medicine
  • Provide for student summer research externships
  • Established endowment funds through The Seattle Foundation to ensure continuation of rural health, Dr. William F. Mead Lecture, and Dr. Roy Virak scholarship activities.
  • Annual present Dr. William F. Mead Lectures in Family Medicine

Washington Academy of Family Physicians members may apply to the Foundation for grants to support medical education, rural medicine, research, and other projects that enhance family medicine.  Grant application deadlines are January 1st and July 1st each year.  Call the WAFP Foundation at 1-800-621-8424 to obtain guidelines and an application form.
