The Washington Academy of Family Physicians (WAFP) is comprised of physicians who specialize in Family Medicine, residents in Family Medicine training programs, and medical students interested in the specialty. With more than 3000 members, WAFP is the largest medical specialty organization in Washington State. The WAFP is the Washington State chapter of the American Academy of Family Physicians
The WAFP works to influence the development of health care policy by encouraging its members to become involved and to take leadership positions; advocating for enactment of legislation and regulations that will enable all Washingtonians to have a medical home and access to health care.
We strive to promote interest in Family Medicine as a career and support Washington State medical schools and residency programs in their effort to provide high quality Family Medicine education programs.
We seek innovative solutions to challenges in providing health care to rural communities, immigrant populations, and generally all underserved citizens of Washington State.
The Washington Academy of Family Physicians is a member-driven organization committed to supporting Washington State family physicians in their efforts to provide optimal health care to the people of Washington through education, advocacy, and research.

Official Journal. Members receive a complimentary subscription to the Academy’s quarterly journal, Washington Family Physician (WFP), offering timely, relevant information about the practice of Family Medicine and information about activities of our members, the board of directors, as well as committees. You are encouraged to submit articles for publication in WFP, as well. Online access to the current issue of WFP is restricted to members only.
Learning and Leadership. Resident member representation is requested at all levels of the Academy, from committee meetings, trustee positions on the WAFP Board of Directors, to delegate positions at the WAFP’s annual House of Delegates meeting and AAFP National Conference of Family Medicine Residents and Students. Resident members are also encouraged to participate in the Scientific Assembly, and several student and resident specific educational events offered throughout the year. These provide opportunities to share your passion and resident perspective with the Academy and to contribute to the development of Academy policy. Your membership in WAFP makes us stronger and more effective as we work to support you – the family physician – and family medicine within the community and around the state. WAFP’s advocacy efforts will improve access to health care for all and is designed to tell family medicine’s story to the many stakeholders that will have input into the redesign of America’s health care system, including legislators, regulators, health care providers, sub-specialists, educators, patients and the public.
