Roy Virak Memorial Family Medicine Resident ScholarshipThe Virak Scholarship is awarded by the WAFP Foundation to one second-year resident who shows evidence of outstanding patient care and strong service to his/her community. Nominations are made by constituent family medicine residency program faculty in early January, and the scholarship is awarded at the Annual Scientific Assembly in May. View informational flyer.
WAFP House of Delegates Meeting & WAFP Annual Scientific Assembly The WAFP offers scholarship stipends to residents to help cover the cost of attending the Annual Scientific Assembly and House of Delegates meeting. WAFP reimburses delegates and alternate delegates for one night’s lodging at the conference hotel. Residents who choose to participate in the Scientific Assembly receive a discount on their registration fees. Residents participating in both events may apply for a scholarship stipend to assist with travel expenses.
National Conference of Family Medicine Residents & Students (NCFMRS)The WAFP provides 5 scholarship stipends ($850 each) to support resident attendance at the AAFP National Conference. Receipt of the scholarship stipend obligates the resident to attend lectures, workshops and the Resident Congress, in addition to networking and exhibiting in the exhibit hall. The scholarship recipient must submit a letter summarizing his/her experience along with the WAFP reimbursement form and original receipts.
National Conference of Special Constituencies (NCSC) Open to 3rd –year ResidentsRepresentatives from the five special constituencies (New Physicians, Women, Minority, GLBT, and International Medical Graduates) meet during this conference to discuss matters important to the individual constituencies and introduce, discuss and vote on resolutions that will be taken to the AAFP Congress of Delegates. 3rd- year Residents are encouraged to attend. WAFP provides up to 3 scholarship stipends to interested residents to attend the NCSC conference in Kansas City. Download Resident Scholarship Form
Pipeline Grant ProgramThe Pipeline Grant Program is in a pilot phase and will provide two grants of $1,000 to local resident and medical student groups who propose to create a sustainable project aimed at increasing the number of Washington medical students interested in Family Medicine careers. Grant applicants are encouraged to develop programs to educate and promote careers in Family Medicine to junior high, high school, undergraduate and medical students. Residents at Washington State Residency Programs and medical students attending Washington State medical schools are eligible to apply. Call for proposals will be announced via emails to Washington State residency program directors, and FMIG leaders and faculty advisors at Washington State medical schools. Call for proposals will also be published in the Washington Family Physician journal.
Mentoring OpportunitiesVolunteer as a physician mentor to pre-med college students. Open to third-year residents with prior approval from your Residency Director. As resident physicians you are strategically placed to create visibility and attraction to the specialty of Family Medicine, and provide realistic insights into the practice. These opportunities take very little time, and the rewards will leave you re-energized and re-inspired to be a family physician! Family Medicine Exchange ProgramThe Family Medicine Exchange Program to Mexico was started in 1999 by James Luke Olson, MD Chair of the Volunteer Medicine Committee. The Family Medicine Exchange Program provides an opportunity for Washington State family physicians and third-year residents to practice volunteer medicine in areas of need; teach Family Medicine in Mexican residencies; improve their Spanish; and experience the rich history, music, and food of a fascinating region of Mexico.
Application Process: Up to four participants can be accepted each year (at a rate of one every three months). Requests for more information and application materials should be sent directly to Dr. Luke Olson, olson.j@ghc.org.
