2004 Student & Resident Retreat

The First Annual WAFP Student and Resident Retreat in Retrospect
Occurred in February, 2004

The First WAFP Student and Resident Retreat was an unqualified success. On February 21st and 22nd, UW students interested in family medicine and residents from Washington residencies met at Hyak Lodge at Snoqualmie Pass. The purpose of the retreat was to provide an environment for students and residents to interact, to learn about activism and opportunities for involvement, and to discuss family medicine. Throughout the weekend there were a variety of speakers including: Dr. Erika Bliss of the Carolyn Downs Clinic who spoke on the Future of Family Medicine Project; Dr. Amanda Keerbs who discussed the residency application process; Dr. Walter Henze of Tonasket who discussed rural life and medicine; Dr. Bob Crittenden who lead an interactive session on health policy.

The atmosphere of the retreat was one of excitement and energy. Students and residents voiced both the reasons for their interest in family medicine and their fears about the field. A talk was given on the future of family medicine and a push for involvement to create the future we envision. Dr. Jeff Huebner (WAFP Resident Trustee) followed with a talk on activism and gave suggestions and examples of how to influence policy. Finally, Dr. Christina Kelly (AAFP Legislative Commission Resident Rep) encouraged WAFP and AAFP involvement and explained the positions open for students and residents.

We had Hyak Lodge to ourselves and many students and residents brought their significant others to the retreat. Excellent conversations occurred throughout the weekend during the sessions and informally at break times. Saturday evening left time for dinner, sitting by the fire, and good cheer (courtesy of Dr. Henze's wine co-op). Sunday afternoon was left open for skiing.

The 1st ever annual retreat was hosted by the WAFP, Jeff Huebner (WAFP Resident Trustee), and Mary Neilson (WAFP Student Trustee)

The weekend ended with a sunny day and an optimistic outlook for our future.
