Student Leadership and Educational Opportunities

Student Trustee, Alternate Student Trustee, and Foundation Student Trustee
One Student Trustee and one Alternate Student Trustee represent student interests on the WAFP Board of Directors. An additional Student Trustee represents student interests to the WAFP Foundation, the philanthropic arm of the academy.  Trustees attend the Board Meetings, and serve on committees to which they may be appointed.  The Student Trustee is a voting member of the board.  To get involved, a student must be elected by the Student Chapter and approved by the House of Delegates. WAFP Board trustee position is elected for a one-year term.   Starting as the Alternate Trustee facilitates the process of becoming the Student Trustee in the successive year (if a student is so inclined).  The WAFP Foundation Trustee is elected for a two-year term, and is elected during odd-numbered years.

Your current trustees can be viewed here: WAFP Leadership Roster

Student and Resident Retreat
Held in January or February, the purpose of the Student & Resident Retreat is to provide an environment for students and residents to interact, to learn about advocacy and opportunities for involvement, and to discuss family medicine. A variety of speakers are brought in throughout the weekend to educate, encourage and inspire students and residents.  There is also plenty of opportunity for fellowship and relaxation.

WAFP House of Delegates Meeting – Student Delegates & Alternate Delegates
The House of Delegates is a one-day meeting where delegates from local chapters gather and set Academy policy for the coming year.  The WAFP Student Chapter has been apportioned six to eight delegates who have full voting privileges, and an equal number of alternate delegates.  Students may also submit resolutions for consideration by the House.  WAFP reimburses delegates and alternate delegates for one night’s lodging at the conference hotel.

WAFP Annual Scientific Assembly – Student/Resident Track
Attend two days of workshops and lectures on subjects ranging from clinical workshops to practice management modeling, to learning about policy and advocacy.  The two-day scientific assembly in May immediately follows the WAFP House of Delegates meeting, which is where Academy policy is set.  Students who choose to participate in the Scientific Assembly receive a waiver of registration fees and have the opportunity for a scholarship stipend to assist with travel expenses.

National Conference of Family Medicine Residents & Students (NCFMRS)
Held every summer in Kansas City, Missouri, this conference is organized by residents and students, for residents and students. This is a phenomenal opportunity for learning about Family Medicine and leadership development.  The Student Congress includes a Delegate and Alternate Delegate from each state. These delegates attend all business sessions, poll their state delegations about issues before the congresses and vote in the elections. Students also have the opportunity to network with hundreds of residency programs, recruitment firms, health agencies, and hospitals; dialogue with peers; participate in a variety of procedural courses to improve clinical skills; and write resolutions and testify on issues important to students.

Dinner with a Doc
Dinner with a Doc is an opportunity for medical students to learn about Family Medicine in an informal setting; typically a physician’s home. Each dinner, co-hosted by two family physicians at one of their homes, is offered to four medical students and their significant others.

Family Medicine Interest Group
The Family Medicine Interest Group (FMIG) provides a network for students interested in family medicine.  The WAFP Foundation sponsors FMIG activities and helps provide information on careers available in family medicine; and keeps members informed on issues affecting the practice of family medicine. Please visit the Virtual Family Medicine Interest Group to learn relevant information about family medicine at each point in your medical education from admission to graduation.

Mentorship Programs
Pre-Med Mentorship Program

This program provides undergraduate and post-baccalaureate students, who are considering a career in medicine, an opportunity to interact with family physicians.  Family physicians volunteer to meet with students in an effort to provide a satisfying orientation to family medicine and to provide experience to learn firsthand the many rewards and challenges of a career in family medicine.  Applications are accepted throughout the year, and students are matched with physicians on a quarterly basis.

Medical Student Mentorship Program
The WAFP will match interested students with a family physician.  This program is currently in development.  Please call the WAFP office for more details.
