Mentorship Programs

LOOKING TO BE MENTORED?
Are you…

  • An undergraduate student with a strong interest in pursuing a medical career, and want to explore your options by shadowing a family physician?
  • A medical student interested in exploring family medicine?
  • A newly graduated resident about to start practice?
  • Recently moved to the state and need help with your new practice?
  • Feeling isolated?  Need to talk to someone about practice issues?

OR

DESIRING TO BE A MENTOR?
Who better to ensure the successful future of Family Medicine than our own members? These opportunities take very little time, and the rewards will leave you re-energized and re-inspired to be a family physician!  Here are a few areas where you could mentor someone:

  • Create visibility and attraction to our specialty.  Provide realistic insights into the practice of family medicine by communicating directly with pre-med college students.
  • Share your passion for family medicine with medical students and inspire the next generation of physicians to become agents of change in their medical careers.
  • Provide encouragement and support to new-to-practice or new-to area physicians in your geographic area by listening, sharing experience, coaching and linking with other resources.

CHECK OUT OUR MENTORSHIP PROGRAMS
One of WAFP’s Mentorship Programs is designed for you.

PRE-MED STUDENT MENTORSHIP PROGRAM
Our program is flexible and is designed to give the student and the physician the ability to customize the time leaving both with a positive experience about careers in family medicine.  It can be anything from a phone conversation to meeting for coffee to a shadowing experience.  Our program is not designed to be long term, but it does give the student an opportunity to meet one-on-one with a family physician, shadow them and ask questions.

MEDICAL STUDENT MENTORSHIP OPPORTUNITIES
WAFP coordinates with the University of Washington’s Family Medicine Department and the WAFP Foundation to help sponsor a number of programs and opportunities for medical students to interact with family physicians on a regular basis including: Dinner-with-a-Doc events, FMIG workshops and seminars, Student & Resident Retreat, through the Rural/Underserved Opportunities Program (R/UOP).  There are also options for more casual mentorship opportunities such as inviting 3rd or 4th year students on clerkship rotations to a local physician or resident’s house for dinner.

NEW PHYSICIAN MENTORSHIP PROGRAM
This program matches new-to-practice or new-to-area physicians with established family physicians in the same geographic area.  This program will help you find a family physician in your geographic area to help you with practice management, patient care, and personal issues so your practice will be successful for you, your patients, and your community.

What does a mentor do?
A mentor provides support by listening and trying to understand the issues and questions; helps with accessing information and resources, and provides vision for the future by being a positive role model.

What does a mentee do?
A mentee is interested in professional and personal growth, is willing to learn, and is receptive to feedback and coaching.
