Physicians that you know – have you thought about contacting your personal family physician? Any family friends or friends of friends that are family physicians? Sometimes a personal connection gives you a great foot in the door and is a much more informal approach.
Ask for referrals to additional physicians. Upon conclusion of a mentoring or shadowing experience, ask your mentor if they can suggest another physician in their clinic or community that might be willing to have a pre-med student shadow.
Physicians in your community (cold-call approach). Here are a few tips from a family physician on “cold calling” a physician’s office to request a shadowing experience:
Research the physician and clinic. Be sure you know the practice's name, find out if they have a website, see what you can find out about the physician(s) in the practice. Research their practice and Google the doctors. You will have information that can help you to make a convincing, personal comment about why you want to shadow this particular doctor.
Have a written statement to leave with the physician's staff, explaining who you are, what you're interested in, any qualifications you have, and that you would welcome his/her assistance in your pursuit.
Provide contact information and if you don't hear anything within a week, call back and leave a nice reminder message.
